Sightstitality of Rome: Chapel Sante-Sanctorum
Personal Capel Santa Sanatorum (translated from Latin as "Holy Saints") Located in the Lateran Palace. It was built in 1278 by order of Pope Nicholas II. Capella was devoted to the Roman martyr of St. Lawrence.
This is one of three parts of the Lateran Palace, preserved after a large fire in 1307. The new building around Sante-sanctorum was built by the architect Domenico Fontano only in the XVI century by order of Pope Sict V.
You can climb to the chapel on two side stairs, as well as in the holy staircase – revered by the shrine. According to the legend, it was from the Holy Ladder Jesus Christ went to the court of Pith Pilate. Therefore, it is possible to climb on it only on the knees, pronouncing special prayers. It consists of twenty-eight steps closed with wooden boards. Places where the Savior Blood got closed with glass. In Rome, the Holy Ladder transported the mother of the emperor Konstantin Great Elena.
Shortly after the opening of the building, the arch and walls of the holy staircase were decorated with frescoes of the authorship of Giovanni Guerra and Cesare Nebbia. Two side stairs are used either during the pilgrimage of a large number of believers, or to descend down.
Drop Sancta-sanctuator is called holy saints due to a large number of sacred relics, frescoes and mosaics. One of the relics preserved to date is the icon of Christ, made in the Byzantine style. It dates back to the century and is called Acheiropoieton, that is, non-manual. It was her that was rushed around the city during the epidemic of the plague. Other references from Capella were transferred to storage in the Vatican Museums.
