Sightstitality of Nice: Saint-Reparation Cathedral
Saint-Reparate Cathedral (La Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate) is located on Square Square in the heart of Nice. Now he is the main city institution of the Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church and one of the main attractions of the city.
The history of this religious building begins the XI century: already at the place of the cathedral there was a church, which in the XVI century received the status of the Cathedral. In 1649, the architect Jean-Andre Gwibert completely rebuilt the cathedral, betraying him the shape of the Latin Cross (a model of the Roman Temple of Saint Susanna was taken as a basis). In 1699, he was consecrated in the name of the Holy Repair – a fifteen-year-old girl who was killed for the commitment of Christian faith. Legend says that the executioners cut off her head, put the body into the boat and sent to the Mediterranean Sea, so that the relatives could never bury the apostate, but the angels led the ship with a martyr to the Bay of Nice, who received the name of the Angels Bay. Here she found peace, and Catholics built a church in honor of the reparations. In the XVIII century, his own bell tower appeared at the cathedral, and at the beginning of the 20th century, apse was attached to each side of the building.
Saint-Reparation is made in the style of early Roman baroque, decorated with numerous sculptures of saints, stucco and interesting ornaments. In the Cathedral there are 10 chapels dedicated to Christian martyrs, as well as three organs. The attraction was included in the List of France National Title in 1906.
