San Luis (Sao Luis)

San Luis (Sao Luis) – The largest city in the northeast of Brazil, the capital of Marajan. Located on the western side of the San Louis Island in the Atlantic Ocean Bay – San Marcus (BAíA DE São marcos), 2930 km north of Rio de Janeiro and 890 km west of Fortaleza. Population – 1 011 943 people (2010).

The city was founded on September 8, 1612 by the French captain Daniel de la Touche (Daniel de La Touche). New settlement received its name in honor of King France Louis XIII. Later, the Dutch invaded here, and in 1641 the city began to belong to Portuguese.

Although San Luis was founded by the French, and later he was busy with the Dutch, a noticeable trace of his architecture was left by Portuguese, thanks to which today the colonial historical center of the city was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The historic center of San Luis is the main attraction of the city, a kind of open-air museum, in which more than 3,500 beautiful colonial buildings are located 17-18 centuries, a variety of powerful streets and narrow alleys.

Still San Louis is known as the capital of Rggie in Brazil. In any other Brazilian city this jamaican rhythm, is not popular as here. It can be heard in many bars and clubs.

In the city and its surroundings many beaches (city beaches are equipped with shower with fresh water), but not all suitable for swimming, as some dirty.
