Cities in Spain: Gijon
The biggest city of Asturias, Gijon (Gijon, Xixon) was almost completely destroyed during the civil war, when in August 1936, miners stormed the barracks of nationalists and the commander of the garrison caused the fire of ship artillery on the attackers. After the Second World War, this port city was restored and today clearly competes with lying only 70 km south of Oviedo in his right to be considered the capital of the region.
