Cities of Italy: Catania

Catania lies on the east coast of Sicily, almost on the southern slopes of the ethna volcano. This is one of the first Greek colonies on the island (approximately VIII in. to N. NS.), almost repeating the fate of Pompeii (in the historically foreseeable past, ash and lava covered the region at least 7 times), and one of the colorful cities of Italy.

sights

The number of historical monuments of Catania is simply enormous, but a symbol of the city for some reason, a fountain Lyotra is considered, or Fountain del Elefant, built Giovanni Batty Vaccarini in 1736. At the same time, here you can find a lot of monuments of the Roman period, including the theater and the Amphitheater (II in.), Odeon (III in.), Greek Acropolis on the Kollyl di Montevergin, the collapse of the aqueduct and forum on Piazza-San Pantaleon, a column on Piazza-Juse, nine terms of different ages, as well as several early Christian basil, necropolia and catacombs.

Latest monuments include the Cathedral of Santa Agatha and the Abbey of the Abbey, Church of Kyza di San Plachto, San Giuseppe Al-Duomo, Santissima-Sacramento Al-Duomo, San Martino dei-Bianchi, Sant Agatha -A-wind, Santa Agatha-Alla-Narnico-Or-San Biangio, Santo Carper, San Beneditto and others (in total in about 180 cult places, each of which has its own original architecture). Equally large variety of local palace complexes, starting with luxurious Palazzo Biscari, Palazzo del Seminario-de-Criechi, Palazzo Clearentz di San Domenico or Palazzo Dei-Dolphini (in total in Catania more than 40 different palaces) and Finishing the rich villas of De-Luke, Regina-Margherita and Vila Coator-Reopero.

The city decoration is also considered to be Parks Villa Bellini and Paper, Botanical Park of the University of Catania, Parco-Giovanni Falconne and Prako-Joen, Castello Castles (XIII in.), the old gate of the port-Udzeda, the Arches of San Jogania de Frery and del Fortino, the Triumphal Arch of the Port Ferdinanda (1768 g.) and palace Casa del Mutilato.

Around the city

The north of the city begins huge slopes (area up to 1250 kV. km) volcano cone Etna – The highest mountain on the island (3340-3350 m, the height varies after each eruption) and the most active volcano of Europe. The ancient Greeks believed that it was here that the dwelling of the Cyclopa is located and it is in the Zherle of the Volcano Lightning Zeus. Now around this forever restless mountain, the Regional Park Etna – the first National Park in Sicily (founded in 1987.) and the best place to trekking in the east of the island. The fertile volcanic landscape of the park is home to many representatives of flora and fauna, and a series of vineyards and magnificent forests stretches on the lower slopes.
