Greece City: Epidavr

East of Nafplion, on the shore of Saronyikos Bay, there is an epidavr (Epidaurus, Epidhavros) – one of the most ancient Greek cities and ports, whose theater at one time was considered one of the seven wonders of the world. Now an ancient city, founded more than four thousand years ago, the Greeks are called the Archeye-epidavros (the Palea-epidavros, epidan-epidavros and non-epidavros are nearby, so it is easy and confused). In antique times, his influence was so large that the entire Argolidal peninsula wore the name of the epidarianity, and the settlements of the same name appeared almost everywhere, where Greek colonists were justified. Although only ruins reached this day, they are intensively digging and have already managed to become one of the most famous archaeological sites of the country.

The visiting card of the city is his stunning ancient theater for 14 thousand places (approximately 330-320. to N. NS., List of UNESCO World Heritage List). The acoustics of this complex is so perfect that all sorts of festivals are still held on its scene. The second point of attraction is also the Sanctuary of Asclepia, which is around which, in general, and an ancient city was built around. This is one of the centers of the origin of medicine in its modern understanding and the present place of pilgrimage from the VI century to N. NS. before the III century n. NS. Now the complex is intensively restored and each year archaeologists open all the new traces of its former majesty.

And this is only the most visible part of the epidaur – fragments of ancient term, huge gymnasiums with many rooms (Romans rebuilt him in Odeon), a rectangular abuton building (KIMTRION, in a modern understanding – hospital), Round Tolos with a labyrinary planning of indoor rooms (clear The echo of the coast of the Snake, which had the most important in ancient Greek medicine – from here and a modern symbol of healthcare), the foundation of a large stadium used to hold games for a long time competing with the Olympic, and even a small sanctuary in honor of some Egyptian gods.

Next to the theater is located a small museum (in the summer is open from Thursday to Sunday from 8.00 to 19.00, on Mondays – from 12.00 to 19.00, in winter – from 8.00 to 17.00; The entrance charge is included in the ticket price of the entire site), which is best to visit before walking along the ruins – in 86 BC. NS. The Roman Consul Sulla almost completely looted the sanctuary, so most of the ruins without explanatory are quite informative. And the archaeological zone itself is open daily: in the summer – from 8.00 to 19.30, in winter – from 8.00 to 17.00, entrance – 6 euros.

Nearby lies the town of Ligurion with a good museum of natural science (open from Thursday to Sunday from 9.00 to 17.00), the Byzantine Church of Ios-Joanis Element and Mycena "Pyramids" along the northeastern road. And the south of the archaeological excavations begin the beaches of the Palea-epidavros resort zone (sometimes called Area-Epidavros), in the area of which one more ancient theater can see, how much smaller sizes, as well as another Tolos of the Mycena.
