Located at the intersection of two important transalpian routes – Felber Tauern and Grossglockner Pass, a long time was an important intermediate link for traveling to Italy. The Romans first rated the potential of this place and founded the settlement of Aguntuum 5 km east of the modern city, near the village Dölzakh (Dolsach), where you can still see his meager ruins. In the 9th century, the city falls under the authority of the German tribes, then passes under the authority of the graphs of Gecz, rulers of the modern city of Gorizia in Italy. In 1500, the last Graph Gecz dies without the heir, and Lienz moves to the emperor Maximilian I, which includes it with the district to Tyrol. And the Castle of Tricks is the residence of GURTS Counts, and the Parish Church of the Sanct-Andra, where the last of the dynasty is buried, are still the center of the city, and many other medieval monuments suffered greatly from the air raids of World War II.
