Cities in Spain: Vitoria (Gasteis)
The official capital of Eusada and Alava Province (Arab) – Vitoria, or Gasteiz (Spanish Vitoria, Basque Gasteiz, officially – Vitoria-Gasteiz), lies with a small hill in the center of fertile plain. Founded in 1181 by the King of Navarre under the name Vitoria, the city already by the XIII century became the successful center of the woolen industry and the trade. Therefore, it can boast the unusual concentration of Renaissance palaces and beautiful churches. Chaotic Romance Streets of the Old Town Center Casco Medieval Like the Network run down the hill surrounded by the sole of later quarters. Although the old areas were rather disliked and have obvious signs of Basque nationalism in the form of a written graffiti of walls, in general, this is quite a harmonious place, and elegant mansions and churches built from a characteristic gray-yellow stone give him a kind of charm.
The heart of the Old Town is considered the Cathedral de Santa Maria Cathedral (XIII-XVIII centuries.) and Plaza de Espanya area, as well as the Medieval Church of San Miguel located between them, Palace-de Escorias Escvibel (XV-XVI centuries.), the old trading house of El Porton (now – a first-class restaurant), an archaeological museum, a carefully renovated Palace de Bendan Palace, in which the Unusual Fournal de Nip Museum is now located (more than 15 thousand items from all over the land associated with Game in the card), an attractive new museum of modern art Artium (more than 1600 items and exhibitions of all directions), as well as the Green Promenade of Paseo de Fri Francisco de Vitoria with his first-class museum of graceful arts. The old town is abounding the noisy bars and taverns, not to mention the abundance of excellent Basque restaurants, which makes it popular and gourmet.
An essential part of the charm of Vitoria is the beauty of the country around the country of countryside. Almost every village here has some monument – where old stone mansion, proudly demonstrating an ancient family coat of arms, where colorful church or traditional rural house on stilts. The best samples of local art include a fortified house-tower (as they do not remember the alleged Caucasian Basque roots?) in the village Mendoza (now there is a Heraldry Museum), the old fortress and the Church of Santa Maria in Salbierre, Ethnographic Mose Comarsal in Suldondo, Surrounded by a wall of a campled street and historical buildings Lagaardia, as well as the winery district of Rioja-Alaves.
